The opposition has proposed an alternative to the SARA programme, promising RM500 cash per month to eligible households.
During the 2026 Budget debate, opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin announced that Perikatan Nasional (PN) would introduce Bantuan Prihatin Nasional (BPN), a cash aid initiative of RM500 per month, if they become the government.
With Sara money, you can’t buy this, you have to spend on that.
Hamzah emphasized that the cash aid is preferable to the SARA programme, which he described as conditional and restrictive.
The STR and Sara programmes have been restructured, maintaining the same yearly value for recipients.
