Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan Strengthen Rail Cooperation with Surge in Grain Traffic

Kazakh-Azerbaijani Rail Partnership Expands

Astana – Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the national railway operator, has sharply expanded its grain exports to Azerbaijan, increasing shipments by 25 times compared to last year. To date, over 600,000 tons of grain have been transported.

Growing Transit Cooperation

The two countries are reinforcing their cooperation under the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). This route plays a crucial role in boosting trade flows between Central Asia, the South Caucasus, and European markets.

Officials from Kazakhstan Temir Zholy and Azerbaijan Railways discussed plans to increase freight volumes, improve logistics efficiency, and synchronize transport schedules.

Key Infrastructure and Future Goals

Both sides are developing port facilities and container terminals on the Caspian Sea to optimize multimodal transport. The aim is to ensure seamless rail and maritime integration within the TITR corridor.

According to KTZ representatives, the strong results in grain transportation demonstrate the growing potential of the route. Future efforts will focus on expanding the range of export goods, including oil products, fertilizers, and metals.

“Our cooperation with Azerbaijan creates a sustainable logistics bridge between Asia and Europe,” noted a KTZ official during a bilateral meeting.

Strategic Importance

The Trans-Caspian corridor is becoming a viable alternative to traditional northern routes, offering faster delivery times and improved supply chain resilience amid changing geopolitical conditions.

The rail partnership not only strengthens bilateral economic ties but also enhances Kazakhstan’s role as a key transit country in Eurasian trade networks.

Author’s summary: Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are scaling up their rail collaboration through the TITR corridor, highlighted by a 25-fold surge in Kazakh grain exports and expanded logistics infrastructure enhancing Eurasian connectivity.
