A 19-year-old UC Berkeley student who died after a possible drowning on Nov. 17 has been identified as George Mauricio Salinas of San Diego. He passed away three days after being hospitalized in critical condition following an incident at an off-campus fraternity house.
Emergency responders were called late in the evening to a large party at the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, also known as “Aquadelt,” on Prospect Street near campus. The student was found unresponsive near the fraternity’s swimming pool during the crowded event and was given CPR before being transported to Highland Hospital.
The student remained in critical condition at Highland Hospital and was pronounced dead there on Nov. 17 at approximately 3:50 p.m. The Alameda County coroner’s office is responsible for determining the official cause and manner of death.
Berkeley police have stated that they do not suspect foul play and do not believe the drowning was related to hazing. However, a 19-year-old fraternity safety coordinator connected with the house may face criminal charges related to providing alcohol to minors during the gathering.
Officials noted that the party drew hundreds of attendees and led the city to issue a civil notice of violation to the fraternity for loud and unruly conditions considered a public nuisance. In public statements, police and university representatives offered condolences to the student’s family, friends, and the wider campus community, calling the loss deeply painful.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, and the wider campus community. The harm felt by this tragic loss is profound.”
