Renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan has once again voiced his criticism of Netflix, claiming the platform has not truly innovated in the world of movies or television. Known for his strong views on the cinematic experience, Nolan emphasized that real creativity lies in what filmmakers bring to the big screen.
“We work in a mature business. I like to say we’re Heinz, we make ketchup. The innovation in our industry has always been and should always be what goes on the screen, not the container it’s delivered in.”
He compared the streaming model to the earlier concept of direct-to-video distribution, suggesting Netflix merely repackaged an existing idea rather than inventing something new. According to Nolan, the heart of cinematic innovation remains with the filmmakers and the art they create.
While his words may have sounded harsh, Nolan later softened his position. In a later interview, he acknowledged Netflix’s contribution to reshaping the entertainment landscape and admitted that his earlier comments were poorly phrased.
“Looking back, my choice of words was quite poor,” Nolan told Variety during a 2017 interview.
