Australia opening batter Travis Head has been withdrawn from the T20 International squad for the remaining two matches against India. This decision supports his preparation for the upcoming Ashes series beginning later this month.
The 31-year-old left-hander will join wicketkeeper Alex Carey to play for South Australia in their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania, starting November 10. This marks Head’s first first-class game since Australia’s tour of the West Indies in July.
The first Ashes Test starts on November 21 in Perth. Head’s shift to red-ball cricket aims to help him better adapt to the longer format before the prestigious five-Test series against England.
Head’s recent white-ball form has fallen short of expectations. In the past month, he scored a highest of just 31 in eight innings across T20Is and ODIs, after an impressive 142-run innings against South Africa in August. Moving back to red-ball cricket is intended to help him regain rhythm and confidence.
According to cricket.com.au, the selectors allowed Head to decide whether to continue in the T20I series or switch to the Sheffield Shield.
Author’s summary: Travis Head’s shift from T20 internationals to Sheffield Shield is a strategic move to rebuild form and prepare for the upcoming Ashes Test series starting November 21.
