Chingola, Zambia – November 8, 2025: A visit by President Hakainde Hichilema to Chingola District escalated into violence on Saturday after part of the crowd turned unruly, leading to arson, looting, and damage to both government and private property.
The unrest began around 14:50 at Chiwempala Market, where President Hichilema was addressing the community. A group of disorderly individuals started breaking into shops and stealing goods. When police tried to intervene, the mob became more aggressive, advancing toward the presidential area.
For the Head of State’s safety, he was promptly evacuated and escorted to Chikola Secondary School landing grounds. Despite this, the mob pursued the presidential convoy, throwing stones and other objects at government vehicles.
Superintendent Lloyd Kanondo, 48, stated: "A white Toyota Land Cruiser, registration ZP 2537 B, was overturned and set on fire by the mob."
Police responded by firing ten warning shots to try to disperse the crowd, but tensions continued to rise. Authorities are currently evaluating the extent of damage to government property.
