The National Capital Commission (NCC) says it is fully prepared to handle the predicted warmer and wetter winter season on the Rideau Canal Skateway.
Ottawa could see between five and 15 cm of snow on Sunday, marking the first official snowfall of the season. However, the snow might not last throughout winter.
Typically, Ottawa experiences its first snowfall in late October, but this year's late arrival could indicate a pattern for the season.
The Farmer’s Almanac 2025-2026 winter forecast suggests that much of southern Quebec, including Ottawa, will likely see more precipitation overall, but less snow. This signals a wetter winter featuring rain and mixed precipitation that could reduce snowfall amounts.
Environment Canada predicts slightly above-seasonal temperatures, though frigid conditions are expected intermittently through December and early January.
Unpredictable winter weather is creating challenges for outdoor events like Winterlude and the Rideau Canal Skateway.
"Every year, we work diligently under challenging conditions to produce enough high-quality ice that is suitable and safe for mass use," Maryam El-Akhrass, NCC spokesperson, stated in an email.
The NCC takes pride in maintaining the skateway and is well-equipped to manage the unique demands of each winter season.
The NCC’s proactive approach ensures the Rideau Canal Skateway remains a cherished winter destination despite increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
