Patti Smith, currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of her debut album Horses, has shared how she uncovered the true identity of her biological father in her latest memoir, Bread of Angels, released earlier this week. The memoir has been more than a decade in the making.
Bread of Angels explores all facets of Smith's life, from her working-class roots in Philadelphia and South Jersey to her periods away from the public eye.
Smith recounts a 2002 phone call in which her mother mentioned having "a story" about genetics. When Smith attempted to discuss it later during a hospital visit after her mother’s fall, she was met with silence.
In 2012, Smith and her sister Linda took a DNA test that revealed they were actually half-sisters, confirming they did not share the same father, Grant Smith.
“We were actually half sisters and didn’t share Grant Smith as a father.”
Bread of Angels traces Smith’s childhood and teenage years, capturing the early sparks of art and romance that shaped her life.
“The memoir sees Smith shed light on all aspects of her life – covering everything from her working-class upbringing to moments of withdrawal from the public eye.”
Bread of Angels was published on November 4, 2025.
