Pitt Basketball Season Preview: Panthers Look to Use Toughness to Exceed Expectations

Pitt Basketball Season Preview: Panthers Aim to Surpass Expectations Through Toughness

The Pitt men's basketball team, guided by head coach Jeff Capel in his eighth season, is striving to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022-23 and only the second time under Capel's leadership. The Panthers’ roster has undergone significant changes with numerous transfers and freshmen arriving, despite returning three players from last year.

Although this year’s squad may not appear as talented on paper compared to previous years, it brings increased size, toughness, and physicality—traits that should help them compete nightly in the ACC.

“We can’t be a team that thinks we can just show up,” Capel said after the second exhibition game. “There is a certain way that we have to show up. We aren’t one of these teams that is just going to out-talent you. We have talent but we don’t have the type of talent that some of these teams do. But if we are tough, and we are together, and we play with an edge, then we can be a really good team.”

Outlook for the 2025-26 Season

Capel’s emphasis on toughness and cohesion aims to compensate for the relative lack of high-end talent, positioning the Panthers as a physically demanding and resilient team in their conference battles.

Author's summary: Pitt basketball looks to leverage size and toughness under Coach Jeff Capel in 2025-26, focusing on grit and unity to overcome talent gaps and reach the NCAA Tournament.
