The Diocese of Auchi in Nigeria has announced the death of a young seminarian who was abducted along with two others in July. The statement was released by Father Linus Imoedemhe, assistant director of communications for the diocese.
According to Father Imoedemhe, three seminarians—Japhet Jesse, Joshua Aleobua, and Emmanuel Alabi—were taken by armed bandits. While Japhet and Joshua regained their freedom, Emmanuel Alabi died during the ordeal.
Bishop Gabriel Dunia of Auchi “has expressed his deep pain and sorrow over the loss of the young seminarian and has called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward protecting the lives and property of all citizens.”
The diocese also reaffirmed its dedication to faith, peace, and justice, placing hope in God’s mercy to console the bereaved family and the seminary community.
The abduction took place on July 10 at the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, where the young seminarians, aged between 14 and 17, were studying. During the attack, Christopher Aweneghieme, a security guard at the seminary, was killed.
In the days following the incident, Bishop Dunia confirmed to Fides, the news agency of the Pontifical Mission Societies, that the kidnappers had contacted the diocese and demanded a ransom for the captives.
The Diocese of Auchi mourns the passing of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who died after his kidnapping, as church leaders urge stronger protection for citizens and continued faith in God’s mercy.
