Isaruit Inuit Arts, based in Ottawa, is hosting a two-day event to celebrate International Inuit Day under the theme Where We Are From. The festivities will start on Friday with a concert featuring Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Susan Aglukark at the Rideau Community Hub auditorium in Vanier.
International Inuit Day, celebrated every November 7, was created by the Inuit Circumpolar Council in 2006 to honor Inuit culture and strengthen Inuit voices throughout the circumpolar world. The day pays tribute to Greenlander Eben Hopson Sr., who founded the first Inuit Circumpolar Conference in 1977.
Aglukark, originally from Arviat, will perform on Friday at 7 p.m., presenting songs from her extensive career spanning 10 albums. She gained national recognition in the 1990s with her hit single O Siem, which led Canadian country and adult contemporary charts.
“Susan Aglukark, seen here at the Galerie d’Art Vincent in Ottawa’s Chateau Laurier on Sept. 5, will perform at the Rideau Community Hub in Ottawa on Friday as part of Isaruit Inuit Arts’ International Inuit Day celebrations.”
Throughout her career, Aglukark has received four Juno Awards and authored two books, including her latest, Kihiani: A Memoir of Healing.
The event aims to celebrate Inuit heritage and provide a platform for Inuit voices through art and music.
