Tanzania: Diocese of Mbeya to Celebrate Sunday Mass for Victims of Election Violence

The Catholic Diocese of Mbeya in Tanzania has invited all parishes, institutions, and faithful to unite in prayer for victims of the recent national election violence. The observance will take place on Sunday, 9 November 2025, marking the 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time in the Church calendar.

“On this Sunday, all parishes within the Greater Diocese of Mbeya are requested to hold special prayer sessions for our deceased brothers and sisters, as well as all those injured during the recent national elections held on 29 October 2025,”

The letter, written by Father Henry Mwalyenga, Chancellor of the Mbeya Diocese, emphasized that the prayers should reflect faith, unity, and love. A central Diocesan Mass will also be held at 9:00 a.m. at Kanisa la Hija, Mwanjelwa Catholic Church in Mbeya.

“We ask all parishes and priests within the Mbeya Deanery, particularly in Mafinga and Mporoto, to encourage the faithful to join this Mass, which will be presided over by the Archbishop and the Auxiliary Bishop. Let our prayers be filled with faith, unity, and love, invoking God's mercy and healing.”

An Associated Press analysis published on 6 November 2025 noted that Tanzania continues to grapple with the aftermath of unprecedented election-related violence across the nation.
