New poll finds majority of Hoosiers oppose redistricting

Majority of Hoosiers Oppose Redistricting

A recent survey of 800 voters by the Virginia-based polling firm Bellwether Research found that 43% of Hoosiers would be less likely to vote for their legislator if that person supported redistricting. Overall, most Hoosiers oppose redrawing Indiana's congressional maps.

Consistent Polling Results

This new poll aligns with similar surveys conducted last month, which also showed majority opposition to redistricting in Indiana. Additionally, those earlier polls revealed low approval ratings for Governor Mike Braun and pessimism about the state's future direction.

Focus on Affordability Over Redistricting

Christine Matthews, president and founder of Bellwether Research, noted that respondents were more concerned about affordability than the issue of redistricting itself.

“Voters in Indiana want state legislators to focus on cost of living, things that make their lives better, and they don't think this political redistricting idea is going to do anything to make their lives better,” Matthews said.

Strength of Opposition and Support

Matthews highlighted that nearly half of those opposing redistricting felt strongly about it, whereas only about a quarter of supporters felt strongly in favor.

“If I were a state legislator, I would not be worried about where I stood on redistricting in terms of backlash. I would be worried about not doing enough for voters in their real lives,” she added.

Political Views on Redistricting and Donald Trump

Research shows Indiana Republicans hold a 90% favorable view of Donald Trump. However, only 37% of those opposing redistricting believe it betrays the president.

Summary: A recent Bellwether poll reveals Indiana voters mainly oppose redistricting, prioritizing affordable living over political changes, with strong opposition outweighing strong support among voters.
