Thousands of people face the risk of dying from flu this winter as the UK prepares for a surge in infections. NHS England announced that 2.4 million vaccination appointments will be available to book starting next week.
Experts warn that flu-related deaths could be severe this season. Last winter, flu deaths more than doubled, reaching 7,757 according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), compared to 3,555 the previous year. Although this is less than the 15,867 deaths recorded in the 2022-2023 season, the situation remains grave.
Australia, often considered a predictor for the UK’s flu trends, recently experienced its worst flu season on record. In response, NHS England emphasized the importance of vaccination, comparing the forthcoming 2.4 million available slots to vaccinating the entire population of Greater Manchester or Botswana.
Sir Jim Mackey, NHS chief executive, said, “There is no doubt this winter will be one of the toughest our staff have ever faced.”
He also shared, “Since stepping into this role, the thought of a long, drawn-out flu season has kept me awake at night.”
