The Roadrunners are celebrating their 15th football season in 2025. As one of the newer FBS programs, now in their third year in the American Conference, UTSA built its football legacy from the ground up.
After forming the team in 2010 as a practice year, UTSA competed as an FCS Independent in 2011. The following season, they joined the Western Athletic Conference before transitioning to Conference USA in 2013. By 2014, the program achieved full FBS membership.
In 2011, UTSA set modern NCAA startup records by drawing 56,743 fans to their inaugural matchup against Northeastern State and averaging 35,521 spectators across six home games.
The team reached its first postseason appearance in the 2016 New Mexico Bowl, marking six years of progress. The next season, UTSA earned its first victory over a Big 12 opponent, defeating Baylor 17–10.
UTSA continued to climb with a historic 2021 season, opening with a victory over Illinois from the Big Ten and securing its first conference title with a 49–42 win against WKU. The Roadrunners ended that season with a 12–2 record. They repeated as conference champions in 2022 with a 48–27 win over North Texas, closing the year 11–3.
“The Roadrunners made history in 2021, capturing their first conference championship and finishing another standout season.”
In just 15 seasons, UTSA evolved from a brand-new team to a two-time conference champion, establishing a remarkable legacy in college football.
