The impact of Star Trek: The Next Generation on a generation of 1990s kids cannot be overstated. I watched every episode with my mom. At my friend's house after school, a giant cardboard cutout of Captain Jean-Luc Picard welcomed us in the hallway. I followed Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher, on social media into my twenties. My son is actually named Wesley, though my husband thinks the name came from explorer John Wesley Powell.
